The Genealogy of Shorgetsi Simon and Brothers Sanasar and Baghdasar

The history of Rind village is woven from human destinies that have weathered historical storms, preserving their national identity and love for their native land. One such ancient family holds a deep and rich history, with roots reaching back to the Parskahayq province of Historical Greater Armenia.

The history of this clan is closely intertwined with two fateful events in the history of the Armenian people: the Great Deportation organized by Shah Abbas in 1604 and the Treaty of Turkmenchay in 1828.

Ethnographer Yervand Lalayan, studying the settlements of Vayots Dzor, rightly noted that although the resettlers of Rind immigrated from various places, they were indigenous to Vayots Dzor by origin. This suggests that the ancestors of this family lived in Vayots Dzor before being driven deep into Persia. By a twist of fate, they lived for about two centuries in the settlement of Shoragyal in Persia. For this reason, upon returning to their homeland, they were given the name “Shorgetsiner” (People from Shoragyal) by the locals.

In 1828, seizing the historical opportunity, the four sons of the clan’s patriarch Grigor and his wife Zanazan—Simon, Sanasar, Baghdasar, and Khachatur—returned to Eastern Armenia and settled in Rind, becoming some of its first resettlers. They dedicated themselves to restoring the devastated economy, becoming devoted cultivators of the land and pillars of the village.

Branches and Generations
1. The Eldest Brother: Shorgetsi Simon

Simon was born in 1808 (his wife, Haykanush, was born in 1814). He was the elder of the dynasty. In historical archives, particularly in the cameral census lists of Rind village from the 19th century, the name of Shorgetsi Simon is clearly mentioned, validating the clan’s roots. Simon had 3 daughters, 1 son, and 3 grandsons; however, unfortunately, his lineage did not continue through the male line.

2. Sanasar and the Habetents Lineage

The second brother, Sanasar (born 1810, wife Maran born 1818), had a large family: 3 sons and 4 daughters. The sons were Stepan, Karo, and Hayrapet. It was from Hayrapet that the Habetents dynasty was formed, the descendants of which still live in the village today.

3. Baghdasar and the Baghdoyents Lineage

The third brother, Baghdasar (born 1812), became the founder of the large and branched Baghdoyents clan. He had three sons: Mkrtich, Khachatur, and Anton.

  • Simonents (Simonyans): Originated from Mkrtich’s son, Simon.
  • Khachatur’s Branch: Baghdasar’s middle son, Khachatur, had two sons: Zakara and Garegin.

Andonents (Antonyans, Grigoryans): Baghdasar’s youngest son, Anton (born 1853), founded the Andonents dynasty. Anton had five sons: Mkrtich, Sargis, Lyudvik, Yeranos, and Grigor. His descendants living in Rind today mainly bear the surnames Antonyan and Grigoryan.

4. Khachatur and the Karapetyans

  • The youngest brother, Khachatur (born 1822), had two sons: Vasak and Karapet.
  • Vasak’s three sons were Hamayak, Aleksan, and Hovhannes.
  • Karapet’s son, Sedrak, had two sons: Razmik and Myasnik. Their descendants bear the Karapetyan surname in honor of their ancestor.

The clan’s chronicles are enriched by modern archival discoveries. According to the “Pamyat Naroda” (Memory of the People) official archives, a member of the dynasty, Janshik Ludvigovich Antonyan (born 1916, Rind), from the Andonents branch, was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class for his bravery during the Great Patriotic War (Document №78, 1985). This stands as a testament to the courage and patriotism of the family’s descendants.

Different branches of the clan still live and create in Rind today, remaining an integral and vital part of the village’s historical chronicle.
