Watermill Penstock in Kakavadzor

In the rich historical and cultural heritage of Rind village, the exceptional watermill penstock located in the abandoned settlement of Kakavadzor holds a unique and mysterious place. It is included in the list of immovable historical and cultural monuments of Rind. Situated about 4.5 km north of Rind, this monument not only represents great historical value but also amazes with the brilliant skill of ancient engineering thought.

It is a massive natural boulder that was transformed by human hands into a powerful water engine. The logic of the structure’s operation is based on a simple but ingenious physical calculation.

A wide hole with a diameter of 1.5 meters is carved into the upper part of the boulder. It descends in a funnel shape to a depth of about 5 meters and gradually narrows, turning into a narrow hole bending towards the south at the very end.

Ancient masters purposefully directed the water flow into this upper wide funnel. Due to the large volume of water and the sharp narrowing of the hole, the water pressure was artificially multiplied. The water erupting with immense force from the narrow bottom hole is exactly what turned the heavy wheel of the watermill, ensuring its uninterrupted and powerful operation.

According to experts and archaeologists, this unique type of watermill was created back in the era of antiquity. This is crucial evidence that millennia ago, the people living in this region perfectly mastered the art of water management, the skill of harnessing the forces of nature for their economic needs, and complex stone-working technologies.

Today, the ancient penstock of Kakavadzor has received a new breath of life. This historical structure, once left in silence, has now become one of the stops for ecotourism and hiking trails passing through the mountains of Rind.

Hiking enthusiasts and tourists have the opportunity not only to enjoy the stunning mountainous landscapes of Rind in the lap of nature but also to see this man-made miracle with their own eyes, standing at the crossroads of ancient history and nature.
